In 2366, Crusher experimented with medical nanite robots, rendering them sentient. Nanites recognized as an intelligent species and granted colonization rights to planet Kavis Alpha IV. Later that year, Crusher accepted to Starfleet Academy. Missed transport due to participation in a mission to rescue Commander William Riker, Counselor Deanna Troi, and Ambassador Lwaxana Troi from abduction by renegade Ferengi. To reward his sacrifice, Captain Picard granted him field promotion to ensign. Crusher served with distinction during the inital Borg Incursion of Sector 001. Displayed bravery in adversity when he cared for injured Picard after a transport crash on Lambda Paz. Crusher officially entered Starfleet Academy mid-term in 2367, joined Nova Sqadron flight team. On Stardate 45208, while vacationing on Enterprise-D, Crusher and Ensign Robin Lefler assisted in foiling a Ktarian scheme to commandeer the ship and its crew with an addictive interactive game. In sophomore Academy year, was involved in a Nova Squadron accident that killed Cadet Joshua Albert. During subsequent hearings, Crusher admitted to having participated in a prohibited maneuver and covering it up with other squadron mates. Officially reprimanded and forced to repeat sophomore year. In 2370, Crusher became involved with former Federation colonists on Dorvan V, who were being transferred under protest to Cardassian rule. Resigned Starfleet commission to live on Dorvan V.
